The State of Food Rescue at Hy-Vee: An Untapped Opportunity for Impact
Hy-Vee, a cornerstone grocery chain in the Midwest, operates over 180 Fast & Fresh and traditional grocery stores across eight states. With such a vast network, the potential for a robust food recovery program is immense. Yet, as recent data reveals, only a fraction of these stores have independently confirmed food donation initiatives.
Fast & Fresh: A Missed Opportunity?
Out of 26 Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh stores surveyed in Polk and Dallas counties:
Only 3 stores have an independently confirmed food rescue program.
5 stores were confirmed to have no donation programs.
A staggering 18 stores fall into the "unconfirmed" category, leaving their food recovery status unclear.
These numbers highlight a critical gap. With smaller store footprints but high foot traffic, Fast & Fresh locations are uniquely positioned to reduce food waste and serve local food pantries effectively.
Traditional Grocery Stores: Mixed Results
In the same region, 18 traditional Hy-Vee grocery stores were evaluated:
Only 4 stores have confirmed food rescue programs.
3 stores were confirmed to lack any donation initiatives.
11 stores remain in the "not confirmed" category.
Traditional grocery stores often handle larger volumes of perishable goods, making them essential players in reducing food insecurity. However, the inconsistency in food recovery efforts signals missed opportunities for meaningful community impact.
Why Food Recovery Matters
Every year, millions of pounds of edible food are discarded, contributing to both environmental harm and increased food insecurity. Hy-Vee has the infrastructure and community presence to turn this challenge into a success story.
A Call to Action
With better transparency, dedicated partnerships, and a streamlined approach to food rescue, Hy-Vee could set a gold standard in corporate food recovery initiatives. Stronger commitments from grocery chains like Hy-Vee are needed.
The numbers tell a story: Hy-Vee is capable of far more. A robust, system-wide food rescue program isn’t just a possibility—it’s an urgent necessity.
It’s time to turn these numbers around and ensure every store becomes a hub for positive change.
