The Granger Public Library: A Story of Grassroots Change and Community Impact

The Granger Public Library is a shining example of what happens when local leaders see an opportunity for change and take action. At the heart of this story is Harriet, the former director of the Granger Public Library, whose curiosity, determination, and community spirit have made a lasting difference.

It all began when Harriet learned about community refrigerators from her colleague Mary, the director of the Perry Public Library. Perry had launched its community fridge in 2019, and Mary shared insights on how it was working: a safe, legal, and effective way to share perishable food resources with those in need. Harriet was immediately inspired. A refrigerator was secured for the Granger Library, and the journey began.

Since its launch, the community fridge at Granger Public Library has seen its fair share of change. It's been moved at least four times, each adjustment informed by feedback from library patrons. Harriet and her team paid close attention to what worked best, listening to their community and adapting along the way. The fridge quickly became more than just an appliance—it became a symbol of care, collaboration, and resourcefulness.

The success of the fridge wasn’t just about placement or logistics; it was about relationships. Harriet didn’t stop at setting up the fridge—she leveraged her role as a trusted community member to build sustainable partnerships. She reached out to her regular grocery store and gas station, asking them to contribute to the fridge. And they said yes. These same businesses had declined similar requests for years from larger organizations and executive leadership. But Harriet wasn’t just anyone—she was a familiar face, a neighbor, and a loyal customer.

Harriet's success demonstrates a powerful truth: change often happens at the grassroots level, driven by individuals who are deeply connected to their communities. My role in this journey was simple: I answered Harriet's questions, addressed her concerns, and connected her with the resources she needed. But Harriet did the real work. She built trust, fostered partnerships, and led with heart.

Today, the Granger Public Library stands as a testament to what’s possible when local leaders know better and do better. Harriet’s story is a reminder that change doesn’t always come from the top—it often starts with one person, one idea, and one bold step forward.

Harriet and the Granger Public Library didn’t just launch a fridge—they launched a movement. And in doing so, they showed us all what’s possible when compassion, persistence, and community spirit come together.
